The strategy chief at the Dutch public broadcaster NPO has been brought in to enhance AI capabilities in news publishing.
Ezra Eeman has been appointed to spearhead a series of AI initiatives at WAN-IFRA, aiming to bolster the integration of artificial intelligence technologies within the news publishing sector. With an extensive background in media innovation and digital transformation, Eeman is expected to assist WAN-IFRA members in navigating the rapidly advancing AI landscape, facilitating a clearer understanding of AI opportunities while fostering collaboration among media professionals.
Eeman expressed enthusiasm about his new role, noting the critical nature of mastering AI in today’s media environment. His statement highlighted the potential he sees in creating strategic connections between AI capabilities and the overarching strategies of news organisations. Eeman’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to enhance the digital capabilities of media outlets amid ongoing shifts in audience engagement influenced by technology.
For over a decade, Eeman has been at the forefront of numerous innovation projects that have significantly influenced the media industry, particularly through the application of AI in content creation and automation. He is the strategy and innovation director at NPO, the Dutch public broadcaster.
In conjunction with Eeman’s appointment, WAN-IFRA has announced various programmes designed to aid its members in implementing AI tools effectively. One of the core components of this AI-centric strategy is the establishment of an AI Community, which will serve as a networking platform for news media executives and content creators to exchange knowledge and insights on AI technologies. This community is set to utilise tools such as a Slack channel, periodic webinars featuring industry experts, and comprehensive case studies to spur collaboration and skill development within the sector.
Furthermore, WAN-IFRA has initiated regional and international AI Forums, which will gather AI practitioners and thought leaders to share best practices. Successful events have already taken place in cities such as Bengaluru, Jakarta, Madrid and Paris, with future forums planned for Frankfurt and Mexico City. These gatherings are designed to foster an environment for discussing AI applications across various media contexts, underpinning WAN-IFRA’s mission to elevate the industry’s AI literacy.
Additionally, WAN-IFRA plans to conduct AI-focused study tours, the next of which will occur in San Francisco and Silicon Valley in late January 2025, followed by a tour in Bengaluru in mid-February. These tours will allow media professionals to engage directly with leading AI innovations and technologies, enhancing their understanding of practical applications within their own organisations.
Another significant addition is the AI Academy, an online platform offering self-paced modules that focus on the applications of AI in newsrooms. This initiative aims to equip media professionals with practical skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly automated content landscape.
Moreover, WAN-IFRA is collaborating with OpenAI on its Newsroom AI Catalyst Accelerator programme, which currently trains 128 newsrooms globally, focusing on building AI prototypes and scaling effective AI solutions tailored for news media. This collaboration seeks to strengthen the media industry’s capacity to innovate through technology, addressing current and future challenges.
To further underpin these initiatives, an Advisory Board has been formed, chaired by Eeman, comprising AI specialists and media professionals from reputed organisations. This board includes notable figures from companies such as Reuters, Gannett Media, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Dow Jones, among others. Their collective insights are expected to shape a comprehensive AI roadmap for WAN-IFRA, guiding member organisations through the complexities of AI adoption in a strategic manner.
