As social media algorithms shape news consumption, experts stress the critical need for media literacy to help audiences discern truth from falsehood.
Growing Importance of Media Literacy in the Age of Social Media Algorithms
In a world increasingly governed by the algorithms of social media, the need for media literacy has become crucial. This sentiment was shared by journalist Svetoslav Ivanov, host of the programme “120 Minutes” on bTV, and popular vlogger Stefan Popov – Chefo, during discussions with the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.
According to a report from the Reuters Institute, social media platforms have become significant sources of news for Bulgarians, with 56% of Facebook users in Bulgaria turning to the platform for news, and YouTube serving as a news source for a third of its users.
Svetoslav Ivanov highlighted the influence of algorithms, noting that the dissemination of information is increasingly directed by the objectives of major companies behind these platforms. Stefan Popov – Chefo pointed out that algorithms tend to favour viral content, often leading to the spread of fake news, which exploit the emotional vulnerabilities of audiences.
Ivanov stressed the importance of media literacy, particularly for the younger generation, to discern truth from falsehood. Chefo echoed this, advocating for investment in media literacy; noting that nations with high media literacy also tend to enjoy greater financial prosperity.
The duo discussed the impact of algorithms on content virality, with Ivanov citing the example of Jair Bolsonaro’s rise in popularity in Brazil due to algorithmic promotion of conspiracy theories and historical distortions. Chefo criticised social media platforms for their lack of responsibility regarding the content they allow to circulate.
Both Ivanov and Popov emphasised the importance of education in fostering media literacy. Chefo drew parallels between media literacy and financial well-being, highlighting that informed societies are often prospering societies.
In terms of content creation, Chefo observed a trend where many creators focus on creating sensational and often outrageous content to achieve virality. This presents a challenge for making meaningful and insightful content as engaging and widespread as more trivial content.
Ivanov underscored the continued relevance of traditional media, emphasising the need for respected journalism to establish a presence on social media platforms and adapt to their dynamics to reach younger audiences effectively.
The discussion also touched on the blurring lines of content creation, with Ivanov acknowledging the presence of honest journalism in social media spaces alongside manipulative content. He noted the diverse nature of YouTube content creators, cautioning against viewing them as entirely good or bad.
This dialogue underlines the complex landscape of modern information dissemination and the pivotal role media literacy plays in navigating it.
