Adobe unveils Project Concept at Adobe MAX 2024

At the annual Adobe MAX conference in 2024, a significant development was unveiled that could transform the landscape for artists and designers. Adobe introduced Project Concept, a new AI-driven platform that positions itself as a revolutionary tool for the creation and manipulation of digital art. While high-profile features such as new Adobe Sneaks and AI tools for Illustrator got the limelight, Project Concept quietly offers innovative capabilities that could fundamentally change artistic workflows.

Project Concept distinguishes itself from Adobe’s existing AI initiatives by being a standalone AI-focused platform, rather than an integration within established software like Photoshop or Illustrator. Existing Adobe AI developments, notably through Firefly, influenced traditional software when deemed suitable. Contrarily, Project Concept marks Adobe’s first foray into a pure, AI-centered platform designed explicitly for the new wave of artists who are embracing generative AI technologies.

During Adobe MAX, attendees witnessed live demonstrations showcasing Project Concept’s potential. This platform allows artists to generate and remix art, photographs, and images based on initial pieces and user prompts, effectively enabling them to produce new series of images with relative ease. Central to its appeal is its capacity to overcome one of the main hurdles in AI-generated art: the lack of detailed control over outputs. With its Remix tool, Project Concept empowers artists to have greater command over the final product, a capability that has been elusive in other generative AI tools.

Another key aspect of Project Concept is its focus on efficiency and sustainability. By centralising AI image generation and creative processes, artists can potentially reduce their GPU usage, power consumption, and time commitment, making it an appealing option for professional creators working on complex projects.

Costin highlighted that Project Concept is less about retrofitting AI for established programmes and more about pioneering entirely new user interactions. This vision grants Adobe the liberty to innovate without needing to integrate every feature of legacy programmes like Photoshop, allowing for a cleaner slate in development.

While Project Concept was available for hands-on exploration at the Adobe MAX 2024 show, it’s clear that its full potential and futuristic approach may not have been fully grasped by all attendees. Nonetheless, Adobe envisions it becoming accessible within the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, noting that it will integrate into familiar platforms like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe Express but will remain distinct in its foundational approach to creating new creative workflows.
