Deutsche Presse-Agentur has launched a programme to connect traditional newsrooms with digital-first creators, aiming to test new formats and reinforce fact-based reporting on social platforms.

The initiative — Creator x News, supported by Google — was announced at a Berlin conference and will bring media organisations and journalistic creators into structured collaboration. It reflects a wider shift as audiences increasingly encounter news via social media, often through voices outside established outlets.

“Many people now encounter news first on social media — often through individuals who do not come from traditional newsrooms. This shift is changing the news ecosystem. With the Creator x News programme, we want to actively shape this change and enable collaboration that strengthens fact-based information in digital public spaces,” said Teresa Dapp, chief executive of dpa-infocom.

The programme begins with a multi-month working phase pairing creators with newsroom teams. Participants will examine editorial standards, revenue models and the use of artificial intelligence in production. The Google News Initiative will provide training on AI and digital tools, while dpa will lead workshops on reporting practice.

“Emerging news voices have become important actors in the digital news environment. Creator x News creates space for new forms of journalistic collaboration. We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with dpa and to support this initiative, which builds a bridge between traditional newsrooms and new voices,” said Gerrit Rabenstein, Head of News Partnerships, Central Europe at Google.

The project centres on practical collaboration. Creators and publishers will work together to adapt reporting for short-form platforms and exchange skills, from community engagement to media law and editorial ethics. dpa will compile the results into a whitepaper outlining best practice.

Participants will present findings in Hamburg in November, with organisers aiming to offer guidance for an industry adapting to platform-driven distribution and new forms of journalistic influence.
