The AI search company is offering AI-generated insights on voting, details about candidates, and will track vote counts live on election day.
Perplexity has offered a glimpse into how it will cover big events with the launch of its Election Information Hub. This new platform provides AI-generated responses to inquiries related to voting processes, candidate summaries, and will live track vote counts on November 5, using data from The Associated Press (AP).
The information encompassed within the hub, such as polling requirements, locations and timing, is derived from data provided by Democracy Works, a well-regarded source that also powers similar services offered by Google. Perplexity ensures its election-related content is sourced from a carefully curated selection of reliable and informative sources. This includes vetted domains like Ballotpedia, along with various news organisations, all chosen to uphold non-partisan and fact-checked standards.
Sara Plotnick, a spokesperson for Perplexity, confirmed that both AP and Democracy Works are official partners of this initiative. Plotnick emphasized the company’s commitment to actively monitoring the system to maintain prioritization of these trustworthy sources when fetching answers to election queries.
The hub’s interface offers users insights into what’s on the ballot as per their entered location details, such as an address or city. As election day progresses, tabs will be available for monitoring presidential, US Senate, and US House elections. The system will provide a state-specific breakdown, indicating the percentage of votes counted and current leaders in these critical races.
However, the AI summaries generated by the platform are not without inaccuracies. For example, there was an omission regarding Robert F Kennedy, where the system failed to update users that Kennedy had withdrawn from the presidential race. Another peculiar occurrence involved a listing for a “Future Madam Potus” candidate, which upon interaction, offered a summary of Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy complete with non-standard imagery, diverging from typical presentation.
Addressing these errors, Plotnick informed that the company is currently investigating the Kennedy oversight and clarified that sometimes write-in candidates may appear in specific contexts based on a user’s location. The misrepresentation with Harris’ summary remains unexplained, although it was acknowledged that “Future Madam Potus” is indeed running as a write-in candidate according to Ballotpedia.
Perplexity’s introduction of this AI-driven hub represents a significant step in blending technology with politics to enhance voter accessibility to crucial electoral information. The endeavours and partnerships with AP and Democracy Works underscore a commitment to providing reliable data as part of this pioneering initiative.
