Hearst has introduced a voice-controlled AI assistant on its recipe site Delish, offering home cooks hands-free guidance through recipes. The tool, called Cooking Coach, was originally developed as a weekend experiment by Alexandria Redmon, Hearst’s senior director of AI initiatives, and has since grown into a full-featured product that addresses common kitchen challenges like setting timers, adjusting portions and suggesting ingredient swaps.

As first reported by Digiday, Cooking Coach is built using OpenAI’s GPT large language model and trained solely on Delish’s archive of more than 30,000 recipes. The assistant can walk users through step-by-step instructions, respond to questions in real time and even switch languages. The development team spent five months refining the tool, which launched across the site this spring.

Joanna Saltz, editorial director at Delish, said early versions of the assistant included unintended quirks such as speaking in a “Scottish brogue”. Now accessed via a pop-up that requests microphone permissions, Cooking Coach aims to deliver smooth, voice-enabled interaction on mobile and desktop devices.

The launch reflects a wider trend among publishers to embed AI tools directly into their digital properties. As search engines and chatbots increasingly answer queries with AI-generated summaries, tools like Cooking Coach are a way for publishers to keep audiences engaged on their own platforms. Saltz acknowledged some traffic has been lost to Google’s AI-generated recipe features but said Delish’s focus remains on providing “a better experience” for users.

Cooking Coach builds on Hearst’s earlier work in voice-enabled recipes, including the Good Housekeeping Test Kitchen skill for Amazon Echo in 2018. That offering used voice prompts to guide users through cooking instructions. The new tool offers a more sophisticated conversational experience, though Hearst has not yet said whether it plans to integrate it with third-party smart speakers.

Hearst is analysing chat logs and user data to inform future upgrades, which may include natural language search and visual tools such as pantry photo scanning. AI consultant Josh Jaffe told Digiday that a next-level version could evolve into a “personal sous chef,” offering predictive suggestions and contextual tips based on user behaviour.

Hearst is not alone in this space. Startups like Yes Chef and AI Cooking Coach are also using generative AI to transform traditional recipes into voice-guided or interactive experiences. But Delish stands out for combining this innovation with its deep archive of trusted content and a clear editorial identity.
