The CNN anchor aims to deliver in-depth analysis of global issues amid rising demand for impactful journalism on audio.
CNN’s chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour is joining forces with UK-based audio company Global to launch a new series of original podcasts offering in-depth reporting and analysis on world affairs.
The project will run alongside Amanpour’s existing work at CNN, including her flagship programme Amanpour, and her PBS show Amanpour & Company. It marks her first major move into podcasting and reflects a wider shift among prominent journalists towards more direct forms of audience engagement.
Global, which owns radio stations such as LBC, Capital and Classic FM, said details of the first series would be announced soon. Its chief broadcasting and content officer James Rea described Amanpour to Deadline as “the journalist every newsroom respects and every world leader listens to”, adding that her podcasts would take listeners “to the heart of the biggest issues on the planet.”
Amanpour said podcasting offered a “powerful space to speak truth, hold power to account, and connect with listeners in a direct and meaningful way” at a time when disinformation and polarisation were distorting the media landscape.
Global reaches more than 50 million people across radio, podcasts and video each week. Its most successful podcast to date is The News Agents, hosted by former BBC journalists Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall.
Amanpour’s entry into podcasting follows a wave of veteran broadcasters turning to on-demand audio as traditional broadcast audiences fragment. Her partnership with Global is expected to bring her trademark interviews and reporting to new formats and audiences.
