The latest episode of SNL features a clever parody of TikTok trends with notable cameos and a humorous take on the addictive nature of social media.
Saturday Night Live Delivers a Humorous Take on TikTok Trends in Latest Episode
The iconic sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” aired a new episode on 19th October, diving into the world of TikTok with a parody that featured a blend of recognisable cameos and current internet trends. The nearly four-minute segment, titled simply “TikTok,” cleverly captured the essence of the social media platform, offering viewers a whirlwind tour of its varied content.
The sketch opened with a signature vertical iPhone perspective, showing a character texting their significant other, before becoming lost in an endless scroll of TikTok videos. The skit brilliantly encapsulated the addictive nature of doomscrolling, a familiar habit to many social media users.
The plethora of TikTok parodies included everything from viral dance challenges and fitness influencers to culinary critiques. Marcello Hernandez made an appearance with his viral “Espresso” cover, while newcomer Ashley Padilla portrayed a fitness influencer vigorously engaging her followers in workout routines while slipping in promotional content.
One standout moment featured Kenan Thompson as a food reviewer candidly sharing his thoughts on an unconventional snack — chicken coated with Fruity Pebbles cereal — from the comfort of his car. Heidi Gardner played a traditional housewife, humorously depicted as a 22-year-old expecting mother of ten, multitasking between meal prep and crafting activities for her children.
In a nod to podcast culture, Chloe Fineman took on the role of Alex Cooper from the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, and Bowen Yang reprised the role of influencer Harry Daniels. He was humorously depicted serenading high-profile political figures like Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump, only to be rebuffed by musical guest Billie Eilish herself.
As Harry Daniels, Yang’s serenading antics were met with Eilish’s amusing rebuke, “Here’s some rent, please stop following me.” Meanwhile, Marcello Hernandez transformed into Danny Nahbrah, engaging with Johnson’s Trump, while Mikey Day delivered an entertaining weather forecast as Nick Kosir amidst a thunderstorm. Ego Nwodim critiqued a “Chili’s on Jefferson Avenue,” and Dana Carvey, portraying President Joe Biden, presented a lighthearted dance in the Oval Office.
The narrative cleverly wove in a subplot where the main character, who had been engrossed in TikTok, missed the birth of his child, a humorous twist underscored by a text alert from his partner declaring, “YOU LITERALLY MISSED THE BIRTH OF OUR SON!!!”
Hosted by actor Michael Keaton and featuring Billie Eilish as the musical guest — performing “Birds of a Feather” and “Wildflower” — the episode also saw Alec Baldwin’s return to the stage. Instead of reprising his famous role as Donald Trump, Baldwin portrayed Fox News’ Bret Baier, interviewing Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris during the cold open.
The video of the TikTok sketch was later shared on SNL’s YouTube channel, with a playful description that read, “Mindlessly scrolling through TikTok is the perfect distraction from becoming a father.”
This episode continued the show’s tradition of blending humour with current cultural phenomena, while offering a satirical lens on the ubiquitous influence of social media platforms like TikTok.
