The tech journalist discusses his innovative approach to content distribution and monetisation.

Eric Newcomer has successfully turned his newsletter business focused on start-ups and venture capital into a significant revenue stream, achieving $2 million in earnings. In an interview with Simon Owens, published by Talking Biz News, Newcomer discussed his approach to content distribution and monetisation strategies in the digital publishing landscape.

Newcomer gained early traction in his career by securing interviews with influential CEOs, including Dara Khosrowshahi of Uber and Tony Xu of DoorDash. A pivotal moment for his newsletter occurred in January 2021 with the release of a comprehensive report on the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. This piece resonated widely within Silicon Valley, significantly raising his profile.

To balance the demands of producing in-depth articles while maintaining reader engagement, Newcomer adopted a diversified content strategy, marked by shorter analytical pieces. This method allows him to continuously deliver value to his audience while reserving substantial reports for completion over longer periods. His publishing style, which he referred to as “chaotic,” hinges on his ability to surprise readers with a mix of long-form journalism and concise insights.

“I think part of what people like is that they never know what they’re going to get,” Newcomer told Owens. “Sometimes I drop these stories that I’ve been reporting for a while … and sometimes I’ll just sprinkle small scoops into the middle of a random story. And I feel like the variety is part of the fun.”

In an era where traditional models of revenue generation are being challenged, Newcomer embraced a gradual pricing strategy for his newsletter. He initially set a subscription price of $150 per year, which has since increased to $200. When asked about converting free readers into paid subscribers, Newcomer revealed that he has not formulated a definitive strategy concerning paywalls. His publishing strategy includes offering a majority of his best reporting free of charge, delaying the implementation of paywalls until deeper content sections within the newsletter.

Newcomer’s experience exemplifies how modern publishers are diversifying their content distribution and monetisation tactics in the ever-evolving digital landscape. As traditional advertising revenues fluctuate, many publishers are exploring various business models, from subscription plans to innovative content formats like events, awards, and niche publications targeting specific audiences. This multifaceted approach enables them to mitigate risks associated with dependence on a single income stream.
