The union representing Politico staff alleged breaches of AI usage rules in their contract.
Politico is in dispute with its union over alleged breaches of contract relating to artificial intelligence, in a case that could set important precedents for how journalists influence AI deployment in the newsroom.
The PEN Guild, which represents staff at Politico and its sister outlet E&E News, claims the company failed to give the required 60-day notice before rolling out new AI tools, as stipulated in its contract. Union chair Ariel Wittenberg said management had not engaged in the good-faith negotiations required when technology changes could affect jobs.
The dispute, first reported by Wired, follows Politico’s introduction of AI-generated live news summaries for major political events, including the Democratic National Convention. More recently, it launched a subscriber product called Policy Intelligence Assistance in partnership with the startup Capitol AI. Politico executive Rachel Loeffler described the initiative as a way of “seamlessly integrating generative AI with our unmatched policy expertise”.
But union members claim they were blindsided by the move – and worry that the pace of AI adoption is outstripping internal editorial controls. In one example, an AI-generated summary incorrectly attributed actions taken by the Biden administration to Kamala Harris, his vice-president. Others included language, such as “criminal migrants”, that would not have passed editorial standards for human-written stories.
“This isn’t just a contract dispute – it tests whether journalists have a say in how AI is used in our work,” said Jon Schleuss, president of the NewsGuild, the union’s national body. He noted that, with no federal regulation of AI in journalism, collective bargaining agreements are one of the few tools available to enforce oversight.
Politico, which is owned by the German media giant Axel Springer, denies it has broken the terms of the deal. A spokesperson said the company “takes its obligations under the collective bargaining agreement seriously” and is committed to ensuring that AI tools meet ethical standards.
Unlike human-written articles, which go through multiple layers of review before publication and removal, union members claim AI-generated content has been deleted or edited without the same rigour. Wittenberg called this a “double standard” that undermines trust and accountability in the newsroom.
The contract clause requiring advance notice of job-impacting technology is among the first of its kind in the media industry – and could become a model for other newsrooms grappling with the rise of AI. The PEN Guild’s grievance marks the first major test of such protections.

- https://www.politico.com/about/ai-live-summaries-methodology – Politico is experimenting with using artificial intelligence to summarize topics, curated by editors, that drive the conversation at major national events. This offers readers live, updating summaries of what’s happened on key issues, complementing our journalists’ analysis in articles and our live blog. The process begins with a live broadcast feed from the event. We use AWS Transcribe to convert the audio into captions. Editors review the captions and flag who is speaking. This ensures that each part of the transcript is accurately attributed to the correct individual. Editors also identify the most relevant topics discussed during the broadcast. These topics help ensure focused and meaningful summaries. We feed the transcript into OpenAI’s GPT-4o language model and instruct it to generate summaries related to a specific topic. Our editors monitor the summaries to ensure quality and timeliness.
