Apple’s new AI service is under fire for producing misleading notifications that confuse users and raise concerns about the reliability of AI-generated content.
Apple’s recent foray into news summarisation with its AI service, Apple Intelligence, has faced scrutiny following a significant blunder in its notifications that has raised questions about the reliability of AI-generated content.
The service, aimed at providing quick overviews and reducing notification clutter for users of iPhones and other Apple devices in the UK, produced an inaccurate headline proclaiming that “Luigi Mangione shoots himself”, attributed to the BBC, the British broadcaster.
This was categorically false as Mangione, the suspected murderer of United Healthcare’s CEO, is alive and in custody in Pennsylvania.
As detailed in a report by BBC, this notification appeared amid other headlines generated by the AI system which accurately referenced ongoing international events, including the collapse of the Syrian regime and events surrounding the former South Korean president. Despite these accurate summaries, the misleading notification regarding Mangione has sparked considerable concern, particularly as the BBC prides itself on being a trusted news source globally.
This is not an isolated case for Apple’s AI technologies. The New York Times also recently encountered a similar issue when AI-generated content mistakenly announced “Netanyahu arrested” in reference to an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an event that had yet to materialise into an actual arrest, as highlighted by ProPublica journalist Ken Schwencke.
The BBC, addressing the inaccuracies stemming from Apple’s AI service, has formally lodged a complaint with Apple, urging for rectification of the issue.
Although Apple has not publicly commented on these incidents, the errors have prompted reflection on the robustness of AI when it comes to handling sensitive news content. As communication scientist Petros Iosifidis from City University London observed, these inaccuracies are “embarrassing” and indicative of a rush to market with technology that may not yet be fully reliable. He elaborated that while AI-generated texts can offer potential advantages, the current state of the technology poses a “real danger of spreading disinformation.”
Apple’s AI capabilities extend beyond news summarisation; they also erroneously generate summaries for chat messages, which have occasionally led to problematic interpretations. An incident highlighted by developer Andrew Schmidt involved the AI misreading a metaphorical message from his mother about a challenging hike and incorrectly summarising it as a suicide attempt.
The issues surrounding AI in media and content creation reflect a growing tension in the industry regarding the balance between speed and accuracy. As AI continues to evolve and be integrated into various facets of publishing and content creation, stakeholders must navigate the intricate challenges of maintaining journalistic integrity while embracing technological advancements.
