A new trends report from Google suggests that AI will transform content creation and management in the news publishing industry next year.

Multimodal AI and advanced AI agents will play a transformative role in the news publishing industry, according to a new trends report released by Google Cloud. The report forecasts a significant shift in how enterprises will leverage AI tools for content creation and management in 2025.

The report indicates that while 2024 will see extensive experimentation with AI applications, 2025 will mark the point where enterprises begin to scale these technologies for broader use.

Oliver Parker, vice president for global generative AI go-to-market at Google Cloud, highlighted that AI agents will become increasingly prevalent in enterprise settings, moving the focus from traditional chatbots to more comprehensive multi-agent systems. “Moving forward, you’ll see different agents talking to different agents,” Parker told VentureBeat. He noted that this could happen almost autonomously, enabling various tasks to be executed without constant human oversight.

The six types of AI agents identified in the report are set to redefine workflows within enterprises. These include customer agents, which interact with clients and provide support; employee agents, which assist with administrative tasks; creative agents, responsible for generating content; data agents, focusing on research and data integrity; code agents for programming assistance; and security agents to bolster cybersecurity efforts.

According to research from Capgemini, although only 10% of large enterprises currently employ AI agents, a staggering 82% plan to adopt them in the coming three years.

As more agents become integrated into business operations, the report suggests that the complexity of managing these systems will require innovative governance solutions. Parker emphasised the need for “agentic governance” as organisations navigate the growing intricacies of AI operations, calling for a unified platform that enables oversight of these diverse agents.

In tandem with the rise of AI agents, the report also highlights the robust growth of the multimodal AI market. Expected to swell from an estimated $2.4 billion in 2025 to $98.9 billion by 2037, multimodal AI systems are designed to process various forms of data — including text, images, video and audio — offering deeper contextual insights for businesses. Currently, tools like Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash, Mistral’s Pixtral 12B, and Cohere’s Embed 3 are leading the charge in providing advanced multimodal capabilities.

Parker explained that as enterprises adopt these sophisticated AI solutions, they are moving from reliance on a single AI model to a multi-model approach, incorporating various AI systems tailored to specific applications. He said: “It’s not just an OpenAI model; it’s also Gemini, it’s Anthropic, it’s Mistral, it’s Cohere, it’s Llama.” This diversification allows businesses to optimise their operations across multiple use cases efficiently.

One of the standout features expected to emerge from this AI evolution is the enhancement of enterprise search capabilities. Google anticipates that employees will no longer be restricted to keyword-based queries, instead leveraging multimodal inputs like images and conversational prompts to swiftly retrieve relevant internal data. This upgraded functionality will enable a more intuitive and integrated search experience within organisations, enabling employees to effectively locate insights across various data silos, such as coding systems and collaboration platforms.

Parker noted that these advances in enterprise search will merge traditional search capabilities with conversational AI, significantly empowering users to amalgamate information across disparate systems. “So how do you query and find out what’s happening across your organisation?” he asked, highlighting the need for sophisticated AI agents to enhance interconnectivity among various applications.
