Douglas McCabe, the long-serving CEO of Enders Analysis, is joining the Guardian later this year as its chief strategy and business development officer. The move marks a major career shift for one of the UK media sector’s most influential analysts.
“It is an enormous honour to be asked to support a journalism brand of unique global importance and influence, and that I have passionately followed my whole life,” McCabe said. “At a time when the whole sector faces extraordinary technology, social and political challenges for journalism, the opportunity of helping address them alongside an exceptional and brilliant team is extremely exciting.”
The appointment was confirmed by Guardian CEO Anna Bateson, who described McCabe as having “a vast knowledge of the media industry – having written hundreds of influential reports at Enders Analysis and advised most publishers in the UK and beyond”.
McCabe’s departure from Enders Analysis brings to a close a 19-year tenure at the media and telecoms research firm, including 12 years as chief executive. He paid tribute to founder Claire Enders, who he said had been his “inspiration and mentor for 25 years”, and praised the Enders team as “exceptional, provocative, independent, impassioned thinkers”.
In a post announcing the move, McCabe said the time was right for change. “There is an art to recognising when it is time to move on, and let gifted teams reinvigorate, refresh, reset. Adaptation needs new energy.”
Enders Analysis has appointed Gill Hind and Karen Egan as managing directors of media and telecoms, while Claire Enders returns to the role of CEO. Thomas Thomson, formerly of Informa, will join the firm as business development director.
