A recent study reveals that 46% of Norwegians are sceptical about AI-generated news, despite quality assurance by journalists.

A significant portion of the Norwegian population is wary of news content produced with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI), according to a recent survey conducted by the Media Businesses Association (MBL). The findings suggest that 46 per cent of Norwegians express scepticism regarding AI-generated news, even when the content has undergone quality assurance by professional journalists.

Randi Øgrey, the Managing Director of MBL, said the results highlight a pressing need for media organisations to enhance their communication regarding the use of AI in news production. Øgrey emphasised the importance of clarifying the role of AI and how it integrates with traditional journalistic practices.

The survey further illustrates the current landscape of AI usage within Norwegian media, noting that 55 per cent of respondents have encountered news that is either wholly or partially produced by AI technologies. Among those surveyed, 3 per cent indicated that they have increased their trust in AI-assisted news, while 46 per cent reported that their trust remains the same or has decreased compared to previous experiences.

In recent years, a growing number of editorial teams across various media outlets have started to incorporate AI tools into their daily operations. These tools are employed for several purposes, including the generation of concise summaries of extensive news articles – which have been widely reported to increase engagement in stories – and the creation of interactive chat services designed to engage users and provide updates on the news landscape.

Additionally, 11 per cent of respondents acknowledged that they have utilised chatbots to follow current events, reflecting a growing familiarity with AI-driven technologies in the realm of information consumption.

As AI technology continues to transform the field of news publishing, the conversation surrounding trust and transparency remains critical. While AI tools can streamline production and deliver content at an unprecedented pace, the apprehensions expressed by the Norwegian public underscore the necessity for media outlets to address concerns about authenticity, reliability and the overall impact of AI on news reporting.
