South China Morning Post’s SCMP Plus has received the gold award at the Digital Media Awards Asia for its pioneering approach to digital subscriptions.

South China Morning Post has won gold at the Digital Media Awards Asia for its premium subscription product SCMP Plus, which was praised for offering in-depth context and analysis on China at a time when high-quality reporting on the region is in growing demand.

The award, in the digital subscription and reader revenue project category, was announced on Wednesday at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur hosted by WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers. SCMP also won gold in branded content for a Morning Studio campaign created with Cathay Pacific’s air-cargo unit, focused on the transportation of pandas to Hong Kong.

Catherine So, CEO of SCMP, said the recognition affirmed the Post’s “leadership in editorial excellence and exceptional creativity”. She added that SCMP Plus was meeting the needs of readers “seeking world-class expertise and analysis on the complexities of China” and praised the Morning Studio team for “setting industry standards in marketing through compelling branded narratives”.

SCMP Plus launched in May 2024 as part of a new tiered model for subscribers. The standard tier gives access to scmp.com, while the Plus tier adds premium opinion and analysis. A top-tier “Bundle Plus” plan includes print newspaper delivery.

The Digital Media Awards Asia are judged on criteria including results, brand understanding, clarity of communication and calls to action.

Other winners included The Straits Times, which won best news website as well as data visualisation and podcast categories, and United Daily News Group, which won in two AI categories.
