As TikTok’s future in the United States hangs in the balance, the Chinese app RedNote is experiencing a surge in user engagement, attracting creators and users alike.

TikTok is on the verge of a potential shutdown in the United States on Sunday, prompting users of the increasingly popular platform to explore alternatives. In the wake of this uncertainty, a lesser-known Chinese social media app, RedNote, is experiencing a significant surge in user engagement and popularity.

The app, known as Xiaohongshu in Chinese, which translates to “Little Red Book,” has jumped to the top of the Apple App Store and is gaining traction on Google Play. Notably, its name references the historical Little Red Book of Mao Zedong, which contained quotes and teachings from the Chinese leader. The platform combines elements reminiscent of TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest, enabling users to share lifestyle content, product reviews, and short-form videos while offering integrated shopping capabilities.

While still a small players, RedNote’s rise suggests that users do not share the ideological concerns of the US government about Chinese apps and are happy to chase the best functionality.

With the TikTok landscape in flux, a number of creators formerly on TikTok have already begun to migrate their content to RedNote, while existing users on the platform are enthusiastically welcoming these new participants. This exchange illustrates a fluid transition as creators seek to maintain their audience and engagement levels amid the uncertainty surrounding their primary platform.

Even though RedNote is currently experiencing a newfound interest, it is crucial to note that this app is not a recent development looking to capitalise on TikTok’s potential demise; it has been available for 12 years but has previously remained under the radar among mainstream social media platforms. Currently, RedNote is reporting just 300 million active monthly users, compared to TikTok’s staggering user base of nearly two billion.

In addition to RedNote, another Chinese application, Lemon8, also owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is witnessing increased user engagement as it attempts to capture the audience migrating from TikTok. However, much like TikTok, Lemon8 may also face scrutiny and potential actions mandating its removal from US app stores.
