The social media platform is preparing to roll out a freemium version of its Grok AI chatbot, previously exclusive to Premium subscribers.
Social media platform X is working on a freemium version of its Grok AI chatbot in a move to broaden access and enhance engagement. Historically limited to its Premium subscribers, Grok’s capabilities will soon be available, albeit with restrictions, to X/Twitter’s wider user base. This development could mark a significant expansion in the usage of X’s generative AI tool.
Currently, the availability of Grok is restricted to only about 1.3 million X Premium users, which accounts for 0.26% of the overall user base. This limitation has resulted in minimal feedback and unclear evidence regarding its utility within the X experience. The introduction of a version accessible to non-paying users is seen as a step to enhance user engagement and could also effectively encourage Premium sign-ups.
Grok is an integral tool developed by X’s parent company, X Corp, and the expansion of its access is expected to provide more comprehensive insights into its potential value. Additionally, the success and broader usage of Grok could be pivotal for X Corp as it intertwines with its subsidiary, xAI, founded by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Musk conceived xAI as a competitor to OpenAI, following his removal from OpenAI’s leadership team, and he envisions it as an integral component of his business ventures.
With xAI already having raised $6 billion in funding, its future success could play a crucial role in sustaining X itself. The interconnection between xAI and X could potentially lead to lucrative data supply agreements between these entities, further solidifying their financial and operational synergy. The establishment of “Colossus,” a substantial AI supercomputer cluster, underscores the scale of infrastructure being developed to support these initiatives.
The financial and strategic viability of both Grok and xAI hinges on demonstrating value to potential partners and investors. Providing wider access to Grok could prove to be a catalyst in achieving these objectives.
However, Musk’s involvement with the incoming Trump administration may introduce complexities, especially regarding partnerships and national security concerns. Notably, xAI has secured backing from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a collaboration scrutinised over security implications. Musk’s potential role in assessing government departments related to AI, foreign investment and data security might lead to conflicts of interest, possibly necessitating his withdrawal from direct business management.
The impending introduction of Grok’s freemium access mirrors X’s intent to foster stronger user engagement, and it positions the platform for strategic growth amidst evolving regulatory landscapes. The developments surrounding Musk’s business involvements and potential political responsibilities will be closely watched, as they may critically influence the trajectory of his tech enterprises.
