- The Guardian is launching a US-focused daily news podcast to strengthen its American presence.
- The programme, debuting later this year, is co-hosted by Kai Wright and Carter Sherman.
- It marks a major step in The Guardian’s push into audio and video journalism in the US.
The Guardian is preparing to launch a US-focused daily news podcast, expanding its American operation and moving into more direct competition with The New York Times and NPR. The story was first reported by Semafor.
The move marks a significant shift for the British publisher as it deepens its investment in the US and pushes further into audio and video. A successful daily show would give The Guardian a stronger foothold in the habit-driven news market dominated by The Daily and Up First.
The programme, set to debut later this year, will be co-hosted by WNYC presenter Kai Wright and Guardian reporter Carter Sherman. It will be supported by a team of 10 staff.
“This is a major step in bringing our audio and video journalism to American audiences, showcasing the breadth of our global content and reporting muscle,” said Betsy Reed, editor of Guardian US.
“It’s also the latest chapter of our ongoing US expansion and a chance to show more Americans the Guardian’s unique brand of journalism: global, independent, and free.”
A spokesperson said the show will launch as a video-first product, designed with a YouTube-native feel and built for clipping and distribution across Instagram and other platforms.
The Guardian has expanded rapidly in the US over the past year, covering national politics, media and sports among other areas. It now employs more than 200 US-based staff, largely in New York, the largest American presence in its history.
