Apple launches rewriting and editing features with Apple Intelligence

Apple has unveiled its latest venture into artificial intelligence with the rollout of Apple Intelligence, marking a significant step in integrating AI technology into its core product lineup. Commencing on 28 October, the tech giant introduced a suite of AI-powered features across its most recent iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Among the debut features are generative writing tools designed to enhance user productivity by offering options to rewrite, revise, and summarise text across emails, messages, websites, and various third-party applications. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, highlighted that Apple Intelligence is a culmination of extensive innovation in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The system aims to offer a user-friendly personal intelligence platform while maintaining stringent privacy safeguards.

A standout feature is the “Rewrite” capability, allowing users to select from multiple text versions and adjust the tone to fit professional, concise, or informal contexts. Meanwhile, the “Revise” tool focuses on improving text quality by checking grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Another addition is the capability to summarise notifications and emails.

While these writing and editing tools are currently available, Apple plans to broaden the functionality by the end of the year. A notable upcoming enhancement includes the incorporation of ChatGPT’s vast knowledge into Siri, expected to roll out in December. This integration will enable users to perform more advanced actions, such as generating calendar events from visual data like an invitation or programme by mid-2025.

The initial wave of Apple Intelligence features is accessible via a free software update with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. For now, functionality aligns with Siri’s language settings set to U.S. English, available on devices such as the iPhone 16 series, iPhone 15 Pro, iPads boasting the A17 Pro chip, and Macs equipped with the M1 chip or later.

Apple has indicated plans to swiftly extend support to other English dialects, including those spoken in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. By April 2025, the availability is poised to expand through a software update to include a variety of languages such as Chinese, Indian, Singaporean English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

This move not only bolsters Apple’s competitive stance in the burgeoning AI market but also diversifies the user experience by embedding sophisticated and practical AI functions into everyday tasks. As Apple Intelligence evolves, users around the globe are set to witness a broader transformation of how they interact with their devices.
