Le Monde has recently engaged its readers with intriguing discussions surrounding its editorial processes, highlighting the integral role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving content quality and performance. The newspaper, which celebrated its 80th anniversary on December 18, 2024, took the opportunity to showcase how AI is influencing journalism within its operations.
Le Monde revealed its collaborative approach to selecting articles. The editorial team assembles regularly, with discussions led by department heads who scrutinise proposed stories from staff writers. The editorial meetings cover various subjects, from political analyses to societal issues, ensuring a collective editorial voice is maintained. According to the newspaper, individual articles might take mere hours to complete, or extend over days and even months, depending on the complexity of the topic and the amount of research needed. The validation of articles is a multi-tiered process, where department heads and senior editors engage in rigorous proofing to ensure adherence to the paper’s high editorial standards.
Anne-Cécile Nguyen-Thanh, a copy editor at Le Monde’s digital newsroom, explained that their role is “to put ourselves in the reader’s shoes, trying to ensure that the piece is contextualised, understandable, accurate, and appealing.” This demonstrates the depth of commitment to producing polished content. The editing department not only checks grammar, spelling, and typographical rules but also focuses on crafting staging elements such as headlines and captions to enhance reader engagement.
To maintain continuous coverage of news, Le Monde operates on a 24/7 basis, with a dedicated team in Los Angeles that works night hours to cater to the European audience. This strategic decision ensures immediate reporting on breaking news while spanning diverse time zones.
AI’s presence in the newsroom is progressively becoming more pronounced. Gabriel Coutagne, the deputy editor responsible for innovation at Le Monde, remarked on the transformational impact of generative AI in streamlining operations. He mentioned the integration of DeepL’s translation services, which, while facilitating quick translations, are still verified by professional editors to uphold accuracy.
Moreover, the creation of audio versions of articles using Microsoft’s neural voice system highlights the newspaper’s adaptation to technological advancements. In March 2023, Le Monde also entered into a partnership with OpenAI to leverage content reliability in AI-generated responses, showcasing a progressive embrace of AI’s potential in media.
Nonetheless, the use of AI does not come without caution. Coutagne pointed out concerns in the photographic department, illustrating a selective approach towards AI-generated editorial content. The newspaper has developed guidelines addressing AI usage, ensuring ethical considerations remain at the forefront of its operations.
On the financial front, the newspaper disclosed its reliance on public funding, receiving €2.3 million in subsidies in 2023, constituting just over 1% of total sales recorded that year. This financial framework supplements the operational costs while the newspaper pursues diverse revenue avenues like subscriptions and advertising.
The ongoing struggle to maintain morale amidst challenging world events remains a poignant aspect of the newsroom dynamic. Manon Rescan, deputy editor-in-chief at Le Monde.fr, acknowledged the emotional toll of reporting on crises but emphasised the importance of camaraderie and support among team members to navigate these challenges.
