Prime Video launches an AI-driven feature that offers summarised recaps to help viewers easily catch up on shows without spoilers.

Prime Video has enhanced its streaming platform with the expansion of its X-Ray feature. Known for providing interactive on-screen information such as actor credits, trivia, and production details, X-Ray now includes a new functionality called X-Ray Recaps. It utilises generative AI technology to offer summarised recaps of entire seasons, individual episodes or even sections of episodes from Amazon MGM Studios Original series.

This development caters to viewers who may have paused a series or lost track of plot developments and require a quick, spoiler-free refresher. X-Ray Recaps are tailored to the viewer’s current point in the episode, ensuring that the summaries remain relevant and accurately aligned to what they have watched.

Adam Gray, Vice President of Product at Prime Video, said: “With the creation of X-Ray Recaps, we’re directly addressing a common problem customers face when streaming content: forgetting where they left off.” He explained that the feature is designed to allow users to seamlessly resume their engagement with a series, reinforcing the relationship viewers have with the content.

The introduction of X-Ray Recaps builds upon Prime Video’s existing functionalities. The X-Ray service, which is seamlessly integrated into various programmes including live sports, offers interactive, real-time information. For instance, during NFL Thursday Night Football, for which Amazon holds broadcast rights, X-Ray provides insights into player statistics and tendencies, and can also deliver highlights of plays that have taken place prior to the viewer joining the broadcast.

The platform’s blog post highlighted the convenience of this new feature and contrast to traditional methods of catching up, such as rewinding or searching for summaries online. The post mentioned that such actions can disrupt the streaming experience and risk exposing viewers to spoilers or redundant content viewing.
