The Independent Media Group is the latest publication to receive funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The Independent Media Group in Britain has announced a significant funding boost from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, amounting to more than $700,000 over the next 18 months, aimed at promoting journalism in “under-reported” regions across the globe. This financial support is intended to enhance the publication’s capacity for investigative stories and the recruitment of new reporters, said its editor-in-chief Geordie Greig.

The funding, first reported by the Financial Times, arrives during a challenging period for the journalism sector, which is grappling with declining advertising revenues and a shift in audience engagement, particularly as news consumption increasingly migrates to social media platforms.

The situation has provoked reactions within the UK media landscape. For instance, employees at the British tabloid Mirror recently expressed discontent over newly implemented page view targets, indicative of a rising trend towards “clickbait” journalism aimed at audience metrics rather than quality reporting.

The funding secured from the Gates Foundation carries a stipulation of creative and editorial independence, a hallmark of their long-standing support for journalism that addresses critical issues, including global health and development. The Guardian and the BBC have previously received funding from the foundation.

Recognising the financial demands of such reporting, the foundation notes that the work often necessitates experienced journalists and extensive travel — factors that have become increasingly difficult to manage as news organisations slash budgets in light of dwindling revenues from both advertising and subscriptions.

Since transitioning to a digital-only model in 2016, the Independent has become profitable, albeit at low levels compared with print days. The group also took over BuzzFeed’s UK operations, enabling them to reach a younger audience demographic, particularly among Generations Z and millennials.

The paper has pursued a reach-based strategy, targeting different platforms with its content and following the numbers.

It has proved successful with The Independent becoming the UK’s largest commercial news website for the first time last year, with an audience of 19.6 million in November, surpassing competitors like Mail Online, the Mirror, Sun and Guardian, according to Ipsos data. It also has significant operations in the United States where it is growing fast.

As the Independent continues to adapt to the evolving media landscape, Greig announced plans for further investments this year in artificial intelligence initiatives in the newsroom. This effort is anticipated to enhance content creation processes and improve the newsroom’s operational efficiency, aligning with the growing trend of incorporating technology-driven solutions within the publishing sector.
