  • John Mulholland brings decades of international editorial experience to the paper
  • His appointment aims to enhance breaking coverage and long-form storytelling
  • The outlet seeks to innovate tone, technique, and technology in local journalism

Kevin Delaney, editor in chief of The San Francisco Standard, has appointed Fleet Street veteran John Mulholland as managing editor, according to a staff memo published by Talking Biz News.

Mulholland will oversee day-to-day news operations, working with section editors on breaking coverage and long-form journalism. He will report to Delaney and is due to start on Monday 30 March. He lives in Sacramento and has served as California editor at State Affairs since last year.

The hire brings decades of senior editorial experience from national newsrooms in the UK and US. Mulholland was editor of The Observer from 2008 to 2017 and became editor of Guardian US in spring 2018, according to Guardian News & Media. He also served as interim editor of Guardian US in 2017 while based in New York.

During his tenure at The Observer, the paper published high-profile investigations, including Carole Cadwalladr’s reporting on the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica affair. He also oversaw coverage spanning media, sport, travel and culture. Company profiles describe him as an editor who managed expansion and worked with commercial teams to extend reach and improve sustainability.

In his memo, Delaney quoted a former colleague saying: “John has a rare combination of sharp news sense and a real flair for the presentation of longer feature ideas. He was a terrific leader in the newsroom, hands on, loyal, great with people, inspiring, low ego, calm under pressure, a pleasure to write for.”

The Standard said Mulholland will help the newsroom test new approaches to tone, technique and technology as it seeks to strengthen daily reporting while producing journalism that travels beyond San Francisco.
