Research notes: The book trade’s discovery problem starts with its own data Ivan Massow, 8 November 2026. Study scope and limits The new NielsenIQ BookData report combines bibliographic records with BookScan point-of-sale data for the top100000 UK printed-book sellers of2025. The 119% description and113% keyword comparisons are average group sales differences, not experimentally identified causal effects. The public company announcement confirms scope and association; the cited Bookseller and Publishing Perspectives accounts supply the figures. The complete report is offered through a contact form and was not inspected. No contact form was submitted. Subgroup title counts, medians, adjustments and snapshot timing were not independently checked. Potential confounding factors in the article are analytical alternatives, not findings established about this dataset. Ingram's separate April2026 account describes an intervention using2000 USD-priced print titles published2019-2021, previously selling24-120 units in a year. It reports9% US and22% UK sales advantage for the enriched group. It describes comparable genre distributions, not random assignment. Multiple subject/keyword elements changed together; neither a single-field causal return nor a universal UK uplift is established. The same selected titles were tracked across markets. The report does not establish that Thema alone caused the larger UK percentage, and raw UK baseline units are not supplied in the accessed account. It is supplier research, with an express no-guarantee qualification. Waterstones' published trading pack specifies a Nielsen BookData information route, a free basic record and a paid enhanced synopsis service; it is undated and contains legacy terminology. Current BookData promotional material confirms a subscription-based enhanced service. No current price quote was obtained, and the article does not claim that every retailer, author or publisher must buy it. Fees, reseller agreements and alternative routes need case-specific checking. BIC accreditation is not evidence of an individual publisher's incremental sales return. The BIC page updated4November2026 specifies ebook16week and digital-audio3week timeliness measurement fromOctober2026. This is a rules statement, not independently verified scoring results. Accessibility Tick requirements are supplementary: failure to supply additional fields need not automatically fail the main award, and the tick is not a legal-compliance assessment. Product-specific requirements differ; the article does not infer that every digital audio record has the same mandatory accessibility fields. A correctly formatted ONIX file can still contain wrong data. The worked coastal-birdwatching example is hypothetical, not a test of any named retailer. Forecasts These are judgemental event probabilities, not measured adoption shares, causal sales effects or dates of guaranteed change. The same forecast's two tested horizons are not an exact crossing-date estimate. Three automatic estimates were completed in the saved Noah programme; two others failed with ForecastBenchmarkError:receipt_validation and have no substitute figures. Complete returned fields, original register and private research contributions are retained in the private claim audit. No additional standalone forecasts or replacement targets were commissioned. ai_metadata_default_20270508 YES 53%; uncertainty interval [29,75]%; deadline 2027-05-08. Question: After 2026-11-08 and by 2027-05-08, will at least one UK trade imprint owned by Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Pan Macmillan or Simon & Schuster make generative-AI drafting of book descriptions or subject keywords a standard production workflow for its new UK print frontlist, with human approval before distribution, rather than a pilot? YES: By 2027-05-08, a qualifying imprint has put this workflow into routine production for its new UK print frontlist. Publisher workflow documentation, implementation accounts or attributable trade reporting may verify operation; buying software or announcing a pilot does not qualify. NO: By 2027-05-08, no qualifying imprint has implemented the specified standard production workflow after 2026-11-08. Experiments and planned deployments alone do not qualify. Question: After 2026-11-08 and by 2027-11-08, will NielsenIQ BookData, Gardners or Ingram launch a new production service for UK trade publishers that supplies ISBN-level acknowledgement of whether at least one UK bookseller has ingested a corrected metadata record, rather than merely whether the distributor sent it? YES: By 2027-11-08, at least one named supplier has launched the specified service and made it operationally available to UK trade publishers, with acknowledgement derived from a participating UK bookseller's ingestion status. A transmission receipt or prototype alone does not qualify. NO: By 2027-11-08, none of the named suppliers has launched the specified operational service after 2026-11-08. Existing services, announcements without operational availability and distributor-only delivery receipts do not qualify.
